Changing Challenges into Growth

“The period of greatest gain in knowledge and experience is the most difficult period in one’s life.  Through a difficult period, you can learn; you can develop inner strength, determination, and the courage to face the problems.” H.H.D. L. His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Life challenges can be significant opportunities for growth.  I used to feel that suffering was required in order to grow.  Fortunately I was able to get through these difficult times and feel that I had moved forward.  I can look back and feel that everything “did work out for the best”.  I was blessed to have enough supportive people and circumstances present to provide the boosts, caring, insight, and advice that contributed to my growth.

Our society values independence and individualism.  Many people feel that they need to accomplish everything on their own, without benefit from others.  I totally understand this tendency.  I’m not sure I would have always asked for help, but being the open book, emotional person I am, people could ask “are you ok?” or “what’s wrong”.    I was probably in my 40’s before I realized how there were many people suffering who didn’t show it, isolated themselves, overworked or self-medicated to avoid their pain.

Now we live in the information age and have an abundance of opportunities to learn and grow, often for free.  In addition to the many on-line articles, there are libraries, bookstores, list-serves that provide free information in the context of marketing, and numerous workshops, some of which are becoming more conscious of offering scholarships.  We have access to many different views and approaches as well as to knowledge that was “secret” and reserved for “elites” until more recent decades.

I realize that people need to be ready to reach out for assistance, but to stretch in this area can be very beneficial.
